Hey all! I'm trying to help a youth hockey group with their logo for the kids. The current logo they use is the Arizona Wildcats logo. The school is ok with them using it as long as it's tweaked enuff from theirs. Talking with someone from the group, they suggested making the ears not so pointed and connecting the sides on the face. using that info, I made a couple quick samples to show them, since I wasn't sure how they wanted the sides connected, so I connected them two different ways. In the samples below, the right side of the pics is the original logo. Any tweaks are done on the left side. I have changed the shape of the ear, and connected the sides in both samples. The woman from the youth group likes the second one better since it still has "whiskers". These are just real rough drafts, and I was wondering if anyone else out there had any ideas that would help out the kids. They'd like to keep the logo to where it still resembles the U of A logo since the youth group is in the same city as the U of A and the Arizona hockey team does a lot with the kids. And good ideas from anyone?

Sample A looks better.  Personally I would change it more.  I did athletic logos like this and I was never a fan of this process (I understand this is what they want).  Either way it still looks too similar to the original logo to me.  I would use the techniques used in the fur above the eyes and use that for the sides.  Add whiskers on both sides it looks odd to me.  Maybe make the the mouth more wide open?  Just my thoughts.

I agree. I suggested they use just a "W" logo. The school has no trademark on a logo like that and all they would have to do is pick a nice looking font and use the letter from it. I told them since the school uses Friz Quadrata as the font on a lot of their logos, to use the "W" from that and make it red, white, and blue like the school's "A" logo. It's weird, the school wants them to be associated with them, yet not use their logo. You would think the school would make a logo of Wilbur the Wildcat as a kid and have the youth hockey use that.

How did this end up?  I know schools are always looking for things on a budget.  It kills me.

They're still waiting to here from someone at the school. They submitted the changes last week to get their approval. Two of the logos the school has no say in since they do not have a "W" logo. I made them two simple "W" logos they could use. The one that uses Friz Quadrata, and the other is cursive "W" which I like better. The people from the hockey group had ideas on what they thought would change the logo enuff to be considered different, so I just made the changes they wanted. The only weak I added was breaking up the sides of the face to look like more whiskers. Here's the head they submitted for approval, and the two "W" options they can use for the group.

Nice Job! I might have went a slightly different direction on the text as far as font usage but really they are good.
